Starstruck: The Luckless, the Abandoned, and the Forsaked Reviewed by Randy Jackson Written by Elaine Lee, Art by Michael Wm. Kaluta Publisher: Marvel ComicsSynopsis: This is—unique. Starstruck uses a futuristic Science Fiction setting to tell the stories of several denizens of this universe, in particular Kalif who falls in love with a headless love droid, a former Amazon warrior named Galatia who now captains her own space ship, and a disgraced former fighter pilot named Brucilla who was framed by her commanding officer into leading her entire squadron into a hopeless battle in order to play a meaningless prank against another academy. Good Stuff: There are some interesting moments and concepts in Starstruck. Galatia and Brucilla are both compelling characters, and Kalif’s story definitely has some amusing moments. I also have to say that I found the concept of the girl guides being thieves and pickpockets quite amusing as well. Not so Good Stuff: Starstruck was apparently adapted from a stage play, and I’d have to say that it simply doesn’t work in this medium. There’s a decided lack of cohesiveness to the story, and the ending really isn’t an ending per se, more like a rest stop. Also, Kaluta’s art is tremendously over-detailed and quite busy, making things even more impenetrable. It’s an interesting comic, but interesting doesn’t make it good. I give this book 5/10.
